Gregory Earl Smith Jr. was born on September 18, 1999, in Miami, Florida. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend who left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Tragically, Gregory’s life was cut short by an act of gun violence. As we share his story, we aim to raise awareness and support in our mission to end such senseless acts.

Gregory’s passion for sports was evident from a young age. He played optimist football for the Scott Park Vikings and the Broward Panthers, showcasing his dedication and talent on the field. In high school, he continued his football journey as a proud member of the American Senior High School Patriots and The International School of Broward, ISB.

Gregory’s aspirations led him to explore various job opportunities during his youth. He gained valuable experience through The Youth Workforce and the CNC, demonstrating his commitment to building a bright future for himself. Additionally, he contributed his skills as a food preparer and cook at the Hard Rock Stadium during his game days.

TRAGEDY ON AUGUST 12, 2020

On August 12, 2020, Gregory’s life was tragically cut short by a senseless act of gun violence. That night, as he prepared to join his friends for a game of basketball, little did he or his family know the devastating turn their lives would take. In a heart-wrenching moment, Gregory bid his mother farewell, uttering the words, “I’m going, ma.” Unbeknownst to them, these would be his final words.

Later that night, Mrs. Smith received a call from the Jackson Memorial trauma center, delivering the devastating news of Gregory’s condition. Despite their desperate efforts, he succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime were never brought to justice, leaving the Smith family with an unimaginable void.

By sharing Gregory’s story, we honor his memory and shed light on the urgent need to address gun violence. Together, we can work towards creating a safer future where lives are not lost prematurely and families are spared the unimaginable grief caused by such tragedies.
