Miami Car Accident Advice

If you live in Miami, you are probably familiar with the fact that the roads can get crazy. Here’s what happened in a recent story that has made headlines in Miami and what you can learn from it.

The Details

Earlier this week, the driver of the silver Infiniti SUV crossed the median on Biscayne Blvd. and NE 36th street. He crashed into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle. Rather than staying and waiting for authorities to arrive, he fled. He was later arrested by police. Once in custody, police discovered he’s had nearly 20 traffic citations for reckless driving. He was also high on narcotics at the time he caused the accident.

What We Can Learn

If you live in Miami, car accident advice gathered from this incident can be helpful. Here are a few things we can learn from this incident.

1. Remain at the Scene

With today’s technology, if you try to leave an accident, especially in a busy area in broad daylight, it’s almost guaranteed that you will get caught. Besides roadway cameras, there are tons of onlookers with their cell phones, capturing evidence from the accident. The bystanders recorded the vehicle license plate, the aftermath of the car accident, and, hopefully, the driver’s appearance. So, if you ever cause an accident, it’s extremely unwise to try and flee. And, if you do flee and get caught, you can face additional charges.

2. Stay Calm

The aftermath of this car accident shows how a crowd can cause things to get out of hand very quickly. Rather than trying to be a hero, stay calm and wait for police. The man with the sledgehammer could face charges by damaging the vehicle. Although it seems like he was trying to be a hero, he probably had the exact opposite effect. If someone was smashing in your car windows, you’d probably want to get away as quickly as possible too! It’s no excuse for the driver, but the sledgehammer guy could have certainly scared him.

3. Record Evidence

One example of smart thinking was the use of cell phones to record evidence. The numerous onlookers who also capture things like the license plate number and further documentation of the accident were smart to do this. Any information can help authorities to build a case in court.

4. Wait for Police

While we see that many people recorded what they saw, it can’t be known for sure if they waited for the authorities. If you ever find yourself in a car accident situation where you are a witness, stay until police arrive so they can take down your information.

5. Be Smart

Finally, the last thing that this accident tells us is to be smart post-accident. Many of the people in the accident aftermath did very risky things (drivers who made illegal u-turns, people walking in the middle of the street in busy traffic, etc.) in order to try to detain the driver. It’s best to keep a level head and know that the police can do a better job than civilians to track down someone. Be smart and think about what you are doing before your impulses take over and you try to be a hero.
