SteinLaw Founder Brandon Stein Talks “Zero Noise” and the Cost of Distraction in New Podcast Episode
MIAMI, FL, UNITED STATES — Brandon Stein, founder of SteinLaw, breaks down how distraction quietly drains productivity in the latest episode of the firm’s podcast, “The Business of Law,” titled “Kill the Noise.” The series, hosted by Stein, looks at the leadership habits and systems behind running a stronger business, covering topics like goal setting, team training, and time management. This episode centers on a concept Stein calls zero noise: the ability to block out distractions, whether from coworkers, notifications, or unplanned interruptions, in order to stay focused on the task that matters most.
Stein notes that the concept applies regardless of title or seniority. Whether someone is a managing partner, a supervisor, or an associate handling a caseload, the ability to eliminate distraction has a direct effect on how much they get done in a day.
In the episode, Stein explains that even a short distraction carries a hidden cost. A five or ten minute interruption doesn’t just take up those minutes, it also pulls focus away from the original task and requires extra time to mentally reset once work resumes. Over the course of a workday, those small breaks add up, often leaving people busy but not necessarily productive.
To help his team recognize where their time actually goes, Stein uses what he calls a time management study, a simple daily log where staff record any task that takes longer than five minutes. He describes it as a way for managers and employees alike to self-diagnose their own day rather than relying on someone watching over their shoulder. The exercise is built around what he refers to as the five-minute rule: if a task can be finished in five minutes or less, handle it immediately, but a day made up mostly of those quick tasks is a sign of firefighting, not real progress toward the work that actually moves a business forward.
Stein ties the exercise back to a broader distinction he sees between employees at every level of a company.
“There’s a difference between a hard worker and a smart worker,” Stein said. “A smart worker is infinitely more productive than a hard worker.”
The episode is part of Stein’s broader effort through “The Business of Law” to share the systems and decision-making behind running a law firm, lessons he says apply just as well to any growing business.
