Good Qualities of a Personal Injury Attorney

good qualities
In Florida, many car accidents occur due to the driver making an error while behind the wheel. This can be something that is deliberately reckless (texting while driving) or a true accident (like something due to weather). No matter the cause, the fact of the matter is that accidents occur every day. With accidents come injuries. Healing and recovery from injuries can be a difficult road, and that’s where personal injury attorneys come in.

With so many options, it’s important to know good qualities of a personal injury attorney. Rather, what should you look for when deciding what attorney to hire? Here is our checklist.

1. Experience

Like any other professional, hiring someone who is experienced in their field is a good quality of a personal injury attorney. That’s not to say that a new attorney is a bad one, but someone with more experience will be able to navigate the complicated legal process for you. When interviewing attorneys, ask about their experience in law school, as well as during their career.

Examples of questions to ask include how long they’ve been in practice, where they went to law school, and of course, what their focus is. Specifically, don’t assume that any experience is good experience. You certainly will benefit from an attorney who is well versed in Florida personal injury vs. an attorney who just decided to make a career switch to this field.

2. Qualifications

Along with experience, you need to check to make sure that your attorney is qualified. First and foremost, they should definitely be licensed to practice law in Florida. In addition to making sure they are qualified, good qualities of a personal injury attorney include recommendations. The attorney may have testimonials on their website. Or, if not, check if they can provide references from past clients.

3. Check payment method

Your attorney should be up front and transparent about their payment expectations for services. There is no strict rule on how an attorney should be paid. Some take a cut of percentages of a court settlement, or some charge by the hour. Your attorney should be clear that personal injury cases are not cheap and require many hours to be logged by them. Make sure that you discuss finances during your initial phone conversation so there are no surprises down the road.

4. Gut feeling

Finally, go with your gut feeling when interviewing attorneys. Anyone who promises what sounds like unrealistic goals, or gives you a bad feeling, should probably be eliminated from your choices. Find someone who you think is honest and clear about what they can deliver.
